INTERESTING "ART-I-FACT" OF THE MONTH:

"Colors have a Temperature!"

Now don't go running for your thermometers. Let me explain ! Colors are often described as having temperatures. They can be described as being cool or warm. Not as having an actual temperature to the touch but rather a descriptive temperature for various colors.

Looking at the color wheel, the cool colors of blue, green and violet would be found on one side of the color wheel. Cool colors are often associated with water, sky, spring, and foliage, and suggest cool temperatures. Think of a green hillside, a blue lake or a purple mountain. These colors are peaceful and will bring over a calm and relaxed feeling to the viewer of pictures painted with these colors. Cool colors are said to be psychologically calming and depressive. Cool colors generally appear to recede or go away from the viewer.

Looking on the other side of the color wheel you will find the warm colors of red, orange and yellow. The best way to remember this group is to think of the color of the bright yellow-orange sun or a red hot fire. Painting using warm colors brings on excitement. Psychologically, warm colors are said to be stimulating and passionate. Warm colors appear to advance and come toward the viewer.

So, by selecting the right colors to use in your paintings, you can make them appear warm and exciting or cool and peaceful.
