News Letter #15 - April, 2003

Hello from Tony,

It's been a very fast season this year and cut a bit short by the USA entering in a war with Iraq. Many of my classes have been cancelled due to people leaving the state of Florida early because of this war. War is never good for business and only increases the stress level of the general population. That's why painting can help take your mind off of things. Many times, I've lost all track of time as I get deeply evolved in a painting. So, why not turn your TV off for a few hours and get started on a painting. You'll be amazed the therapeutic value of oil painting. Read this months "ART-I-FACT" article on how to get started.

Do review my News & Notices for all the new info this month. Reminder, you can now pay online for my packets and products.

INTERESTING "ART-I-FACT" OF THE MONTH:

How to Beginning a Painting.

How to begin a painting is a dilemma that many painters and students face. You get your paints out, brushes ready and then stare at a blank canvas for sometimes hours, hoping that you get some inspirational vision so you can begin to put paint to the canvas. Unfortunately, that just doesn't happen.

Just as a writer must have some sort of idea as to what he wants to write about so does a painter. A writer starts with an idea then makes an outline and jots down some notes. A painter does much the same thing. It starts with an idea, moves to some type of drawing then jots down some notes as to what colors to be used. All of this should be done before you even get your painting equipment out. The more information you provide and preparations you do will all help to make the process of painting easier for you.

After you've got down on paper what you need to get started, it's now time to put it on the canvas. Keep in mind that the purpose of your "drawing" is to be a base or skeleton for your original idea. You can put your drawing on canvas using graphite paper to transfer the pattern your made or free hand the sketch using either charcoal or pencil. Be sure to "fix" your drawing with fixative so it does not smudge when you begin to add paint over it. Some artist actually use paint to lay down their sketch.

It is most important to begin your painting properly. If you don't, you do not have much of a chance at making a good finished painting. Having a good foundation will help in applying the layers of paint that will follow.

Best of luck and I hope this has helped you to get started.
