News Letter #14 - March, 2003

Hello from Tony,

There just doesn't seem to be enough hours in the day to get done all the things I want to do. Time is just flying by as I'm teaching 6 days a week, sometimes 2 classes a day. It's very exhausting but short lived as things will slow back down come mid-April. Hopefully then, I will get working on some new projects but I'm not telling anyone as to what they are. Again, please be patient with me as the ideas come easy but it takes more time to implement and work out all the details. Do review my News & Notices for the many changes this month. Reminder, you can now pay online for my packets and products.

INTERESTING "ART-I-FACT" OF THE MONTH:

Unusual Painting Tools (Part Two)

Now let's head for the garage, basement or utility room and see what we can find there. How about old clean rags, small scraps of wood, window screening, strings or cords, cleaning bags or plastic market bags, brown paper bags, yesterday's newspaper, or any other materials that look interesting. Each will give you a different texture and can be used as an application tool as well.

Strings and cords are great ways to get unusual lines or "cracks" in surfaces. Simply apply paint to the string and drop it onto the surface of your work. Tight balls of newspaper or rags rolled through fresh paint can resemble everything from crushed velvet to aged metal. Texturing with newspaper is easy and cheap, since it's a plentiful and disposable tool. Brown paper bags create a leather-like appearance resulting in a pronounced crackled finish. Small pieces of scrap wood can be used to both apply as well as be used for texturing. Try some old window screening also.

Paint rollers aren't anything new but not used by many artists. They come in different lengths and are great for laying on wide bands of color quickly. With some practice you can create even background tones for skies, florals, landscapes or seascapes. Changing colors on your rollers then applying wet-on-wet can come up with some interesting designs as the colors interact. Also, by tilting or lifting the roller off the surface, using only the very edges of the roller, you can create lines and breaks that mimic trees in the distance, fence rows, barn boards or many other linear details. The can also be especially useful for applying gesso--white or colored to your surface.

These unusual painting tools are familiar to us all, and there is no intimidation or hesitation. Just leap right in and enjoy a new painting experience! Experiment with EVERYTHING!
