News Letter #13 - February, 2003

Hello from Tony,

I'm back on track as newsletter and updates were done nearly a week in advance of my deadline of the first of the month. It did help that my son was on a 3 week vacation allowing him the time to push me along. I'm really trying to get the things I've been telling you about done. So please be patient with me as I sometimes get excited and let the cat out of the bag a bit prematurely. The ideas come easy but it takes more time to implement and work out all the details before going public. Do review my News & Notices for the many changes this month. One being that you can now pay online for my packets and products.

Don't forget your loved ones this month on Valentines Day and for those interested, it's Tina's birthday on Feb. 8th.

INTERESTING "ART-I-FACT" OF THE MONTH:

Unusual Painting Tools (Part One)

Here's a break from the traditional tools for painting where you will learn some new ways to create textures that will set your work apart from most others. Having textures and designs can play an important part in drawing the viewers eye to you work. So let's consider non-traditional ways to apply paint. using some tools familiar to all of us found within your home.

For starters, your hands are fabulous tools to paint with. I do recommend using surgical gloves to protect your hands from the paint which will not interfere with either the result or the pure fun of this painting method. You can use your palms to swipe in your skies or land, the sides of your hands help define edges of objects and your fingers can be used to make squiggles or even tree trunks. Experiment with the different textures and techniques the different parts of your hands will make. Caution: thinner may dissolve some latex gloves.

To experiment further, grab from your kitchen some waxed paper, plastic wrap, foil, inexpensive cellulose sponges, plastic pot scrubbers, plastic spoons, forks, knives and rubber spatulas just to name a few and get ready to begin a texturing bonanza.

Crushed waxed paper, plastic wrap, and foil are great tools for creating the look of deep textures without the use of a lot of paint. Experiment with color and contrast to create wonderful crackle patterns by laying the crushed waxed paper, etc., over a freshly painted area then carefully lifting it off leaving the elegance of rich fabric or the broken pattern of tree bark.

Sponges can be cut to various sizes and shapes then dipped into some paint then applied to a surface to create many different patterns and textures. Sea sponges (which are very porous) are great for making leaf-like textures on a painting.

Using bowl scrapers or spatulas, carve through freshly applied paint with the flat or sides to achieve various textures. They are flexible and easy to use and also make great paint mixers. Also, plastic spoons, forks and knives make multiple textures in wet paint as well as actually painting with them.

Don't miss next month's, "Unusual Painting Tools" (Part Two).
